Glass Plates Exhibition

More than meets the Eye – Glass Plates exhibition
Strokestown Park, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon

Strokestown Park, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon is delighted to announce details of an exciting new exhibition, showcasing the original glass plates of Strokestown Park. The exhibition, entitled ‘More than meets the Eye – the Photographic Glass Plates of Strokestown Park’, which has not previously been open to the public to view, opened last week and will be on display until the 30th November 2012, offering a great day out for photographic enthusiasts.

The collection of glass plates, dating from 1893 – 1919, which are believed to be the work of photographer Henry Pakenham Mahon, features images taken of the walled garden at Strokestown Park as well as images taken of the estate with family and friends also featured.

Glass plates helped to revoluntionise photography in the 19th century making it much easier for photographers to take photographs and print them.  The original darkroom survives intact in one of the rooms in Strokestown Park along with chemicals, developing equipment and cameras making the exhibition a must see for all ages.
